A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held Sunday, August 14, 2016 at 4:00 P.M. at the Oblong Cemetery.
Bettye Ann Perkins, (85) of Newton passed away August 1, 2016 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham, Illinois. She was born in Jasper County, Illinois on May 24, 1931 to Thurman J. Sr. and Luella Huchel Jones. She attended high school in Newton and married Howard C. (Perk) Perkins of Oblong on July 18, 1947.
Sgt. Howard Perkins served in the U.S. Army for 30 years allowing them to travel much of Europe and to live on several army bases throughout the States as well as in Germany. After Howards’ retirement from the Army, they made their home in Oblong. Bettye worked several years alongside her brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Wanda Perkins, in their Café and later worked in the deli at the Oblong IGA. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at Oblong where she served many years with the Ladies’ Alter Society and with several children’s Bible groups.
Bettye loved to go camping and to do handcrafts, such as knitting and crocheting. She was an excellent cook and her specialty, according to all her nieces and nephews, was her chicken and noodles.
She is survived by one brother, Harold V. (Punk) Jones of Washington State, a sister-in-law, Bonnie (Lawrence) Sparks of Newton, a brother-in-law Jimmy Perkins of Crawfordsville, Indiana and by many Jones and Perkins nieces and nephews whom she loved like her own children.
She was preceded in death by her husband Howard, her parents, her brothers: Paul (Thelma) Jones, Kenny (Laura) Jones, Johnny Jr. (Lorraine) Jones, Bob Jones, Jack (Mary Jean) Jones and her one sister, Bess (Clarence) Jourdan, Her brother and sister-in-law Paul and Wanda Perkins, and sister-in-law Marie Klim. She was also preceded in death by eight nieces and nephews and her close friend George McComb.
For the last 13 years, Bettye had been able to enjoy living alone in her own apartment with the care of her nieces and nephews; Cheryl and Richard Yager, Tim and Bert Jones and also with the help of her close friends, Susan Headlee and Marilyn Jones. Also many thanks go to Dr. Szigethy and Maria of Oblong and Dr. Dust of Effingham for many years of good care. Bettye was greatly loved and will be missed by all her family and friends.
